Cake Decorated by Worker with Autism Photo goes viral

Date:

While you would expect a popular cake to look so grand and beautiful, a recent viral cake from a Michigan supermarket went viral for the opposite reason but the story is not really terrible – it is actually wonderful!

Netizen Lisa Aldrich narrated that she went to Meijer, a supermarket in Michigan, to buy a cake for her sister, Mandy.

She found the cake she needed and asked the “bakery-looking employee” whether she could write on the cake. Because the employee said, “yes”, Aldrich immediately placed her order.

It took a very long time for her cake to be finished but Aldrich did not mind and did not really think much about the situation, considering that it shouldn’t have taken the worker a long time to write “Happy Birthday Mandy” on the cake.

Picked out a cake at Meijer. Asked bakery-looking-employee if she could write on it for me. She said she would, and…

When her order was finally finished, she looked the worker in the eye, smiled, and said, “Thank you!” without glancing at the cake.

But when she finally glanced at the cake on her way to the checkout counter, she was surprised at the way it looked.

It surely wasn’t what she had expected but she good-naturedly accepted the cake as it is, thinking that people would think it was funny.

She did inform the cashier at the counter about the not-so-beautiful cake but was surprised when the cashier called the other workers and the manager to the counter.

It turns out the worker was not allowed to work on cakes yet the situation was done and they were all happy that Aldrich was not angry at the funky writing on the cake.

Aldrich wrote, “One cashier put her arm on my shoulder and said ‘the girl who wrote that has Autism. Thank you for smiling and thanking her — even though she’s not supposed to write on cakes, you probably made her day.’”

As to why she posted the cake’s photo and the story on Facebook, Aldrich said, “I thought sharing the story with my Facebook friends might make people consider being nice right away, without knowing the whole story behind something they might not like.”

Now, considering that she wasn’t able to take a video of the heartwarming moment, some people were skeptic about the whole story – did Aldrich just make it up to create a viral post?

Well, CNN reached Meijer management who confirmed that, indeed, the story was true.

“We are proud to have a great team, which includes people with disabilities. This team member was trying to provide great customer service, and our customer was very kind in the way she handled the situation,” Meijer’s spokesperson told CNN.

“So I guess the moral of the story is that kindness is important!” Aldrich declared.
